Head of Software Engineering
Monil has deployed 50,000+ collars across multiple markets. As we expand into the US, we're hiring a Head of Software Engineering to own the software platform, the data and the team behind it.
About Monil
Monil is building world-leading technology for virtual fencing and livestock monitoring. In just four years, we've grown to over 1,000 customers and more than 50,000 collars deployed across multiple markets, and we are now entering a new phase of international growth with rapid expansion into the US.
At the heart of our solution is a collar that combines animal interaction, sensors, positioning, and wireless communication, but the value our customers experience lives in the software: the cloud platform, the data pipelines that turn raw device telemetry into insight, and the apps farmers use every day to control and understand their herds in real time.
We're looking for a Head of Software Engineering to own and scale that software, and to build the team and technical foundations that will carry us through international expansion.
About the role
This is a senior leadership role reporting directly to the CEO, with full ownership of our software engineering function across frontend, backend, and data. You will set technical direction, build and grow the team, and be accountable for the quality, reliability, and velocity of everything we ship above the device layer. The role is part of Monil’s management team and will be crucial to guide the company in a rapid growth phase.
You will collaborate closely with our product and hardware teams. Your effectiveness will depend as much on strong, trust-based collaboration with those teams as on your technical leadership. Product owns the what and the why; Hardware owns the device. You own the how and the when for all software and data products, and you are the connective tissue that turns device capability and product intent into reliable, shipped systems.
Key responsibilities
Own the architecture, delivery, and operational health of Monil's software platform across frontend, backend, and data.
Lead and grow a high-performing engineering organisation: hiring, mentoring, structuring teams, and setting the technical and cultural bar.
Define and drive software engineering standards, and technical best practices across the platform, including CI/CD, testing, observability, and on-call/reliability practices.
Build the data foundation that turns high-volume telemetry into reliable, queryable, and actionable data. Ensure that all models are productionised, platform-integrated, and maintained to the same high standards as the rest of the systems.
Partner closely with Product to translate roadmaps into deliverable, well-sequenced engineering plans, and to make pragmatic trade-offs on scope, timing, and technical investment.
Partner closely with R&D on the device-to-cloud boundary, telemetry contracts, device management, and OTA: ensuring software and firmware evolve coherently.
Own delivery: balance feature velocity against the architectural and operational work needed to scale internationally and reliably.
Be accountable for software quality, security, and the production reliability of customer-facing systems.
We believe you have
Significant experience leading software engineering teams, with a track record of shipping and operating production systems at scale.
Strong technical depth across at least one of frontend, backend, or data engineering, and the breadth and credibility to lead all three.
Experience with modern backend and cloud architectures, distributed systems, and the data infrastructure behind high-volume telemetry or IoT-style workloads.
A solid grasp of modern engineering practices; CI/CD, automated testing, observability.
Experience working alongside product and hardware functions, and a genuine ability to drive outcomes through influence and collaboration rather than authority alone.
Strong people leadership: hiring, growing, and retaining engineers, and building team structures that scale.
Experience with any of the following is a plus: connected/IoT systems and device-to-cloud data flows; edge or on-device ML; low-power or connectivity-constrained system design; OTA and device management at scale.
We believe you are
Passionate about building reliable products that operate in challenging real-world environments.
Comfortable owning outcomes end to end and driving them from idea to production.
Pragmatic, curious, and motivated by solving complex engineering and organisational challenges.
A strong collaborator who communicates effectively across technical and non-technical teams, and who builds trust with peer leaders in Product and Hardware.
Able to hold a high quality and reliability bar while keeping the team moving fast in an engaging way.
We offer
Full ownership of a software function during a period of rapid international growth.
Challenging engineering problems spanning connected devices, large-scale data, and customer-facing applications.
A collaborative environment with significant ownership and learning opportunities.
Meaningful impact on animal welfare and sustainable agriculture.
Competitive compensation and benefits.
Requirements
Candidates must have the right to work in Norway or within the EU/EEA, as we are unable to support relocation or visa sponsorship from outside this area. Some travel might be required.
